racekites

Things have been shaken up a little recently by the site owner – starting to look very slick with a hint of the older racekites forum prior to VBulletin – nice work AS.

Buggy Camera Mount

I have tried several HD video cameras and settled on the GoPro HD Hero, being a robust, reliable and waterproof camera.  I have experimented with a few different mounts but settled on a home grown design which works great for me and is pretty cheap!

The setup consists of  a stainless steel Munsen type bossed pipe clip (the item number on eBay UK is 110839368621) which cost me £6.77 with free postage, and a 200 mm length of stainless steel M10 threaded rod (the item number for this on eBay UK is 251044768989) and this cost £3.59, again with free postage.

This is the mount partially assembled (there are still a couple of bits to add)

This is the pipe clamp – the part that clamps onto the back axle of the buggy.

I’ll make a small plate of stainless which will be bolted between the 2 nylocks and will have a stainless M6 bolt fastened to it which will fit into the tripod mounting on the GoPro housing.  The bolt can be repositioned to the desired position quite easily.

I made one of these from galvanised steel before, but it didn’t really do too well as I rather like going into the sea and the galvanisation didn’t!

One more stainless nut is required to “lock” the rod onto the Munsen ring and voila!

Some time later:

So here’s the finished product ready to use with GoPro mount attached:

Where To Begin?

I bought some floor paint for the garage today (I’ve converted my garage into a workshop).  My wife is looking to do some stained glass panels at the table we set up in the garage for her and I need my bench for various things that I want to do, some kite related (or rather buggy related) and some other stuff too.

I knew that for a while I had simply been chucking stuff in there and telling myself I would “…get it sorted out soon…”. OK let’s be honest here, it’s been used as a dump for just about everything of mine for the last six months and so began the operation code named “Where’s The Damned Floor Gone?”…

Phase 1 – Open the garage door and peer at the carnage within:

We have a 40 foot container as well, and somewhat conveniently, we pass the tip on the way to the container!  After several trips (and some swearing) to the aforementioned container and tip, I met with success!!  We do still have a garage floor!

Phase 2 – Blash some paint on it.

OK, so some of the floor was finally available.  After I cleared away a load of scrap cable (note to self – get down the scrappies tomorrow as there has to be about £50 of copper there!), gave the floor a good sweep (another 3 to 4 kilos of general rubbish) and piled some gear on top of some other gear it was time to set to with the paint and a roller.

So far so good – once this lot dries, I’ll get the rest done.

Right, well it’s been a few days now and here’s the finished (almost) result:

All I need to do now is get the lights mounted above the work benches, possibly pick up a gas heater from somewhere and that should be that!

Also tested out the GoPro camera (haven’t used it in ages) for this final shot.

Very pleased with myself at the moment ;)

Balancing A Buggy

Just spent a very pleasant day with Matt (AKA Windjammer) talking kites and computers and trying to sort out “balancing” my buggy.

Turns out that the weight difference between the front of the buggy and the rear axle is 27 kilos (in favour of the front tyre).  Explains why the back end of the buggy is washing out on turns.  Need to add some weight to the bug in order to compensate for this.  As I’m not a racer, this shouldn’t be an issue, although 27 kilos difference is an awful lot.

Moving the seat is not really an option as the tow point is already fairly central at about 10 cm in favour of the front of the buggy.

I feel the need for some experimentation…
